We believe effective therapy begins with a strong therapeutic relationship. Our team takes the time to listen, understand your goals, and support you with evidence-based approaches tailored to your unique experiences and needs. Whether you are seeking support for anxiety, depression, stress, trauma-informed, grief and loss, life transitions, neurodivergence, dis/abilities, or aging-related challenges, we are here to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

Getting started with therapy can feel like a big step, and we are committed to making the process approachable, supportive, and focused on what matters most to you.

Carol Heiden, M.Ed., LPCC
THERAPIST

Sometimes the first step toward healing is simply having a place to set the weight down.

I believe therapy works best when you feel genuinely seen, understood without judgment, and supported as a whole person — not simply as a list of symptoms or struggles. My approach is grounded, collaborative, compassionate, and direct, with room for honesty, curiosity, and sometimes a bit of humor.

I work with adults navigating grief, caregiver stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, and major life transitions. Whether you are coping with the loss of someone you love, adjusting to changes in health, roles, living or relationships, feeling emotionally overwhelmed, or carrying the weight of difficult life experiences, therapy can offer a place to slow down, process what hurts, and begin moving forward with greater clarity, steadiness, and self-compassion.

My primary therapeutic approaches are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — CBT is a practical, goal-oriented therapy that helps identify patterns of thinking and behavior that may contribute to anxiety, depression, stress, or feeling stuck. Together, we work to build healthier coping strategies, develop greater self-awareness, and create more balanced ways of responding to life’s challenges.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) — EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from trauma, anxiety, and distressing life experiences. Difficult memories can sometimes remain “stuck,” continuing to affect emotions, relationships, and daily life long after an experience has passed.

Using bilateral stimulation — such as guided eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds — EMDR helps the brain safely reprocess unresolved experiences so they lose their emotional intensity over time. As healing occurs, negative beliefs connected to past experiences can gradually shift toward healthier, more adaptive perspectives.

My work is rooted in a strength-based perspective. I believe people are often far more resilient than they realize, and part of therapy is helping uncover strengths that may feel buried beneath grief, stress, fear, patterns or painful experiences.

Over the years, I have worked in community counseling centers, schools, health clinics, advocacy organizations, and animal-assisted settings. I have also been fortunate to learn from extraordinary mentors whose wisdom continues to shape the way I support others. All of these experiences strengthened my belief in meeting people where they are and tailoring therapy to fit each individual’s unique needs and goals.

I also believe animals can play a meaningful role in the healing process. My certified Facility Dog, Pumpkin, may be part of sessions when it feels supportive and beneficial to your therapeutic goals.

I strive to create an environment that feels calm, welcoming, and comfortable. Sessions are available:

  • In person

  • Through telehealth

  • Outdoors in nature

  • In-home when appropriate, particularly for individuals who are homebound or experiencing barriers to accessing care

Areas of Focus

  • Grief and Loss

  • Caregiver Stress

  • Trauma

  • Major Life Transitions

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Human-Animal Connections

Wherever you are in your journey, you do not have to navigate it alone. It would be an honor to walk alongside you as you move toward healing, connection, resilience, and a greater sense of balance and meaning.

Heather McLaughlin, MSW, MPH, LSW
SOCIAL WORKER | THERAPIST

LCSW expected summer 2026

Did you know that geese in flight take turns leading in order to support a steady pace? Therapy can be similar, as we navigate the way forward together. As a longtime social worker I welcome people of all backgrounds, ages 17 to 97. I guide clients through periods of stress and change across the lifespan, especially related to neurodiversity and dis/abilities; parenting and caregiving; and grief and loss. We will address your goals, such as decreasing anxiety or depression, while understanding the broader forces and systems shaping your life. I'm by your side to get you to a place where you can spread your wings wide with possibility.

My relational approach explores thought and behavior patterns through theories such as ecological systems, CBT, attachment, and empowerment. I’ve been a social worker and raised my (blended) family in the Longmont-Boulder-Weld area for 25 years. I hold Master’s in Social Work and Public Health from the University of CA, Berkeley, and a B.S. in Psychology from TCU.

I provide sessions via telehealth, in-office, or outdoors on our lovely five-acre property, with the option to include therapy animals. We typically meet weekly or biweekly to start, though as-needed sessions may be arranged. I hope you’ll reach out for a complimentary consultation so we can get you headed where you want to go.

My areas of focus include:

  •  stress and life transitions

  •  anxiety and depression

  •  neurodiversity and dis/abilities

  •  grief and loss

  •  relationship challenges

  •  parenting and caregiving

  •  older adulthood

  •  human-animal connections

Meet Our Animal Partners

Our carefully selected animal partners are thoughtfully integrated into sessions for those who choose this option, offering emotional comfort and nonverbal support. Whether lying quietly by your side or simply being present in the room, they help reduce anxiety, build trust, and foster a deeper connection.
